HISTORY / OUR STORY
Our much loved village ‘hut’ started life as a temporary classroom at the old Wells Primary School in Polka Road (now Homes for Wells) and was purchased by the village in 1930.
In 1930 it was brought to Wighton on wagons pulled by horses and re-erected by village carpenters. The hut was set on breeze blocks 18 1/2 inches off the ground to let the air through and keep the building dry. They knew what they were doing because 92 years later the hut didn’t have any structural damp when it was taken down and dismantled. In those Wartime days Wighton villagers hosted evacuees from London as well as Land Army girls from all over the country. The hut has been the venue for hundreds of events, celebrations and fun times over the years.
Dances were held every Saturday night, people came from far and wide and the dances were so well attended that there were as many people outside as inside the hut. Wighton had it’s own band and at one point there was a waiting list of 2 years if you wanted to book an event on a Saturday night. We hope that our new hall will be so well loved and used.
The hut was expected to last a maximum of 25 years but over the decades, hard working villagers have managed to keep it going for triple that!
Sadly the time came when it was no longer fit for purpose for the 21st century and a project committee was formed to plan a replacement. The hut was demolished in June 2022 and footings for the new hall were started in January 2023. The new hall was officially handed over to the village on 10th October ready for a grand opening weekend on 28th October
